1969 Draft Lottery

Play with Music

89 pages

On December 1, 1969 friends and family across the nation watch the first televised draft lottery that determines the fate of the country’s young men. It looks like the country wants to send Larry, Andy and Brad to Vietnam. How will they respond?

1969 Draft Lottery revisits the generation who fought the Vietnam war, fought against the war, or avoided the war. Larry, Andy and Brad vow to announce their individual decisions together on New Years Eve.

The play flashes back to the events of the past two years that inform their decisions. Two assassinations, riots, a beauty pageant protest, the Stonewall Uprising, man walks on the moon and Woodstock.

The play also takes us to Vietnam, to the war zone, the infirmary and back home with a flag-draped coffin.

Based on interviews with people who lived through the Vietnam era, the play was inspired by that history class teen who dared ask “Why do we need to learn about the Vietnam war?”
